Jeff Kripal grew up in Tornado Alley, tried to fast his way to sainthood as a teenager, and then one night in Calcutta in 1989, something happened that he's spent almost forty years writing about. Now he's the man behind the Archives of the Impossible: Jacques Vallée's files, John Mack's abduction research, thousands of letters strangers sent Whitley Strieber. Not believing. Not debunking. Just listening. And he told me a story he's never written down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In 1911, the Olympic was the biggest ship in the world, until a Navy cruiser bent its keel. Its owner, J.P. Morgan, couldn't get anyone to pay for the damage. But the Olympic had an identical twin, sitting unfinished in a Belfast shipyard. Over one empty weekend, the names were changed, and the insurance on the damaged ship jumped to twelve and a half million dollars. Morgan cancelled his suite on the Titanic, and so…

Inside are 119 pages, written in Russian by a man his daughter always knew as a plumber. He died before she could ask him about them. The pages describe a flying saucer down to the coil, the reactor, and the fuel. Her husband, a former intelligence contractor, starts pulling the thread. What he finds ties back to a secret Soviet city that never appeared on a map, a decades-long hunt for unexplained aircraft, and a research program that spent millions chasing the same physics. On a December night in 1980, Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum, and six-year-old Colby Landrum took a back road home through the East Texas pines. Styles sell out, so don't wait. For more than twenty years, a hundred people across Italy filled trucks with fruit, water, and industrial chemicals, then walked away and let the cargo disappear. They called the recipients the Friends: an alien civilization living in vast bases beneath the Adriatic Sea. The Friends could teleport supplies, read minds, and reshape the ground itself to build their hidden world. But keeping their bases running depended on something far simpler than advanced technology. It depended on the humans trusting each other. This is the story of a secret alliance between two worlds, the…

In 1970, a U.S. missile carrying radioactive cobalt lifted off from Utah, aimed at a test range six hundred miles away. It never got there. Instead it flew south, crossed into Mexico, and disappeared into a stretch of desert locals call the Zone of Silence. Radios die there, and compasses spin in place without ever settling on a direction. For decades this patch of land has pulled in meteorites, silenced pilots' instruments, and drawn thousands of visitors chasing lights that seem to answer back. We trace the real missile, the cleanup that followed, and the legend that grew around it, then separate what actually happened from what got added along the way. Learn more about your ad…

Some of the sharpest minds in physics have sat down in The Basement, each pushing at the edges of what we understand about reality. We start with the fundamentals, the Higgs boson, the Planck scale, the search for gravitons. Theories tested, published, and confirmed. From there, things get stranger. Entanglement, the double-slit experiment, the idea that reality itself is a simulation, and the possibility that the future is shaping the past right now. Physicists,…

In 1952, nine of America's wealthiest families gathered in a Maine mansion for a séance. Nine ancient gods spoke through a medium and chose nine people to change the world. Eleven years later, the CIA officer who ran that séance's donor list sent a Russian aristocrat to befriend a troubled ex-Marine named Lee Harvey Oswald. That aristocrat introduced Oswald's wife to a woman named Ruth Paine. Every piece of evidence against Oswald, the rifle, the photos, the testimony, ran through Ruth Paine's garage. A…

In this episode, former Navy SEAL and content creator John Allen (Mr. Ballin) joins the host to discuss his transition from special operations to digital stardom. The conversation traverses the intense psychological pressures of the social media algorithm, his experiences with the grueling physical demands of BUD/S training, and the profound 'moral injury' and personal struggles that eventually led to his medical retirement from the Navy. The discussion shifts into the art of storytelling, exploring how shared suffering, true crime narratives, and even paranormal encounters can captivate an audience. From recounting harrowing combat memories in Afghanistan and Peru to analyzing the technical elements of a compelling narrative, the episode explores the thin line between public persona and private reality.

This episode explores the extraordinary abduction story of Carl Higdon, beginning with his encounter with an alien named Oso and his subsequent journey to a distant planet. After being taken from Earth, Carl eventually returns with profound memory loss, leaving behind physical anomalies such as a hollowed-out bullet and a displaced truck. Through hypnosis, chilling details emerge regarding the aliens' true motives: they were searching for food and breeding stock. Ultimately, the narrative concludes that Carl was not chosen for any grand purpose, but was instead rejected because he was deemed unworthy of being part of their collection.

In this deep-dive interview, Colonel John Alexander shares his extraordinary experiences witnessing supernatural phenomena, from fire-walking ceremonies in West Africa to anomalous physical events within military intelligence circles. The conversation explores the intersection of consciousness and reality, examining how biological responses, historical mysteries like Roswell, and unconventional research into UAPs challenge our fundamental understanding of physics and biology. The discussion further delves into the complexities of military operations, including Project Jedi and investigations into unidentified aerial phenomena. From accounts of out-of-body experiences in Vietnam to the investigation of anomalous events at Skinwalker Ranch, the episode examines the tension between scientific skepticism and the undeniable evidence of a much more complex, interconnected reality.

In this deep-dive interview, documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell discusses his transformative journey from a martial arts instructor to an investigative journalist. He recounts how a life-altering illness in India led to a profound loss of identity and eventually paved the way for his career exploring the unknown through the lens of a camera. The conversation shifts into a heavy investigation of the UAP phenomenon, detailing the complexities of whistleblowing and the strategic tactics used by intelligence agencies to shape public narratives. From discussing the legacy of John Lear and Bob Lazar to analyzing recent 'Tic Tac' encounters and the risks faced by individuals like Matthew Brown, Corbell and the host explore the high stakes of seeking truth in an era of information warfare.

This episode explores the historical and prophetic significance of St. Malachy's list of popes, examining how a 16th-century historian verified many early entries as accurate and investigating the fulfillment of later prophecies involving Napoleon Bonaparte. The discussion delves into various interpretations of the 'Prophecy of the Popes,' including how linguistic misprints and different counting methods affect the predicted timeline for 'Peter the Roman.' The episode also examines critical theories regarding the prophecy's origins, suggesting it may have been a piece of 16th-century election propaganda rather than a medieval vision. The narrative concludes by weighing historical accuracy against potential intentional manipulation by scholars.

This episode compilation explores the profound intersections between reality, consciousness, and biological evolution. The journey begins with the scientific mechanisms of CRISPR gene editing and its potential for both medical breakthroughs and dystopian eugenics, moving into the 'Stoned Ape Theory' regarding how psilocybin may have accelerated human cognitive development. The discussion further delves into the mysteries of synchronicity, quantum biology, and morphic resonance—the theory that nature possesses a collective memory. Finally, the episode examines the darker side of influence, detailing historical instances of psychological warfare, subliminal technology, and the engineering of consent through mass media.

This episode explores the vast and unsettling world of cryptids, tracing legends from the Mothman of Point Pleasant to the Mantis Man of New Jersey. The narrative examines various sightings, including Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Chupacabra, while investigating theories ranging from interdimensional 'ultraterrestrials' to biological anomalies hidden within deep underground cave networks. Through a lens of both eyewitness accounts and scientific skepticism, the discussion delves into the potential for hoaxes, misidentifications, and even military cover-ups. From the predatory legends of the Australian bush to mysterious organisms discovered in Antarctic lakes, the episode connects disparate phenomena through shared patterns of electrical anomalies and geological mysteries.

In this deep dive into the nature of reality, physicist Tom Campbell shares his journey from childhood out-of-body experiences to developing a scientific framework for consciousness. The conversation explores how meditation and binaural beats can be used as tools to access different brainwave states, eventually leading to the hypothesis that our universe is a computed, information-based simulation. The discussion delves into the mechanics of this 'digital' reality, examining concepts like quantum entanglement, the speed of light as a pixel limit, and the role of intention in shifting probabilities within the Akashic records. Ultimately, the episode posits that consciousness is fundamental, and our evolutionary purpose is to move from states of entropy and fear toward a more cohesive state of love and cooperation.

This episode explores several chilling internet mysteries, beginning with the 2004 disappearance of Hasumi, a woman who documented her terrifying journey to the non-existent Kisaragi Station on a Japanese message board. The investigation continues into the origins of the disturbing 'Freaky Soup Guy' video and its potential links to animator Raymond Percy, as well as the unsettling disappearance of mukbang creator Kate Yup, examining evidence of hidden distress signals and theories regarding her fate.

In this deep exploration of reality, guest Danny Goehler and the host discuss the intersection of physics, philosophy, and psychedelic experiences. The conversation traverses themes of simulation theory, the potential for AI to act as a mirror for human expansion, and the use of advanced technology like Apple Vision Pro to catalog visual patterns from DMT experiences. The discussion further delves into personal journeys through spiritual awakenings, the practice of Vipassana meditation to process somatic trauma, and the profound implications of encountering a divine presence. Ultimately, the episode examines the nature of consciousness, the tension between determinism and free will, and the idea of finding true freedom by identifying as the space in which all existence unfolds.

This episode investigates the mystery of 'Die Glocke' (The Bell), a rumored Nazi superweapon designed for anti-gravity and time manipulation. The narrative connects historical accounts of ancient Indian flying machines to the post-war disappearance of Nazi scientists under Operation Paperclip. The discussion further explores the scientific links between Nazi 'wonder weapons' and modern propulsion technologies, such as mercury-based ion engines. It examines the potential environmental dangers of mercury in space ventures and the ongoing debate surrounding secret patents for gravity manipulation technology.

In this episode, David Paulides joins the discussion to investigate mysterious disappearances in National Parks and the difficulties of obtaining government records through FOIA requests. The conversation explores various unexplained phenomena, including UFO sightings at Mount Rainier, the suspicious disappearance of Gilbert Gilman, and the potential geological links between granite properties and unidentified sightings. The discussion further delves into Bigfoot research, examining DNA samples that do not match known species, the possibility of interdimensional entities, and the use of advanced thermal imaging. The episode concludes by addressing the pattern of missing German physicists and providing essential safety advice for wilderness travelers.

This episode explores the discovery of the Nineveh Planisphere, an ancient Mesopotamian tablet reinterpreted by rocket scientists as a map of a massive celestial impact event in the Austrian Alps. The narrative details how this trajectory caused catastrophic geological changes, including extreme heat and the formation of frictionite. The discussion further examines scientific evidence surrounding ancient impacts, such as the destruction of Tal el-Hammam and its connection to the Taurid debris stream. While addressing controversies regarding research retractions, the episode concludes with a warning from astronomers about the potential for dangerous, invisible objects within the Taurid swarm to pass Earth in 2032 and 2036.

In this deep dive, Dr. Andrew Gallimore explores the profound neurochemistry and ontological implications of DMT. The conversation traces his journey from a childhood fascination with the paranormal to investigating how DMT might act as a 'reality switch,' potentially allowing the brain to interface with sentient beings in other dimensions or complex mathematical spaces. The episode covers the development of the DMTX protocol for controlled exploration, the neuroprotective hypotheses regarding endogenous DMT during near-death experiences, and the integration of Donald Hoffman's conscious agent theory. Ultimately, the discussion posits that psychedelics may serve as tools to expand our perception beyond a narrow consensus reality into a much larger, more intricate playground of consciousness.

This episode recounts Stefan Mihalik's 1967 encounter with a mysterious, metallic, disc-shaped craft in Manitoba, Canada. The narrative details the intense heat, otherworldly lights, and human-like voices observed during the event, which left Mihalik with physical burns and symptoms of radiation exposure. The investigation into the Falcon Lake UFO incident is explored through military and scientific lenses, weighing evidence of unidentified craft against skeptical theories of a hoax. The episode concludes by reflecting on the integrity of the witness and the unexplainable nature of the physical evidence found at the site.

In this episode, Bryce Zabel discusses his career transition from journalism to screenwriting, sharing experiences from covering space at PBS to producing the series 'Dark Skies.' The conversation delves into the intersection of Hollywood and ufology, exploring how media can be used for both storytelling and government-led disinformation. The discussion covers personal encounters with figures like Carl Sagan, the enduring impact of the McMinnville UFO photos, and the intense behind-the-scenes pressures faced during television production. The episode concludes with reflections on the nature of disclosure and the potential societal shifts following official confirmation of extraterrestrial life.

In this deep dive into the interconnectedness of the paranormal, researcher Joshua Kutchin explores his theory that UFOs, ghosts, and cryptids are all facets of a single, multifaceted phenomenon. The conversation traverses themes of retrocausality, Jungian archetypes, and the 'ecology of souls,' suggesting that these encounters may be part of a complex, non-binary intelligence interacting with human consciousness. The discussion also touches upon personal transformations, the influence of folklore on modern sightings, and how the phenomenon adapts to contemporary culture—shifting from traditional abductions toward more spiritual or technology-driven narratives. Ultimately, the episode examines whether these phenomena are external intelligences or manifestations of the collective human psyche.

This episode explores chilling instances of reality shifting and lost identities. We begin with the story of Lorena in Madrid, who discovers her boyfriend and key life events have been erased from existence, suggesting a slip into a parallel universe. We then examine two paranormal mysteries: Carol McKelleny's encounter with a distorted version of Riverside, California, and the case of Benjamin Kyle, an unidentified man found in Georgia with no memory of his identity. The episode concludes by investigating the mysterious life of William Powell, tracing how DNA genealogy eventually uncovered the truth behind his 1976 disappearance.

In this episode, Joseph Matheny discusses his journey through the 1960s/70s counterculture, detailing early influences in mail art, zine culture, and the profound impact of authors like Henry Miller and Robert Anton Wilson. He recounts his transition from experimental multimedia projects to pioneering work in digital storytelling, including the development of 'Emory,' a database-driven system that utilized a digital version of the 'cut-up' method. The conversation explores the evolution of Alternate Reality Games (ARGs), tracing the lineage from the Incunabula project and 'Ong's Hat' to modern phenomena like QAnon. Matheny shares experiences with technological innovation, the emergence of the internet via Lynx, and the blurred lines between fiction and reality in the age of weaponized information and digital myth-making.

Thirty generations later, rats were solving the same maze in 20 tries. Rats on a different continent — with no connection to the original colony — started at 25. The knowledge had spread. No one could explain how. A Cambridge biochemist named Rupert Sheldrake spent years studying cases like this — rats, birds, crystals, dogs, and humans — all showing the same pattern. His conclusion got his book called the best candidate for burning in modern scientific history. Then someone stabbed him for it. The evidence is stranger than it…

His grandfather found and lost seven gold mines in New Mexico. Luke found them again. Now he's planning the largest LIDAR scan ever done in the Amazon. We also go deep into Alexander the Great's missing body, the Were Jaguar cults of the Olmecs, and the Minoan civilization that may have been Atlantis. Learn more about your ad choices. Rizwan Virk built games downloaded millions of times, invested early in Discord, and taught at MIT. Then he put on a VR headset in Sausalito and nearly fell over reaching for a table that didn't exist. That five-second moment sent him down a rabbit hole connecting quantum physics, Eastern mysticism, and video game design — and he's not sure he's found the bottom yet. Secret listening posts sit inside ordinary buildings in major cities. Numbers stations still broadcast coded messages over shortwave radio — and no one officially admits why. This compilation traces the full arc of modern surveillance, from hidden urban infrastructure and sonic weapons to subliminal influence campaigns and a computer virus that nearly started a world war. Havana Syndrome left diplomats with brain injuries and no official explanation. A wire encircles New York City that most residents have never heard of. And at the end of it all sits the quantum computer — a machine powerful enough to crack every encrypted secret humanity has ever kept. Nothing stays hidden forever. Learn more about your ad choices. The Why Files releases video episodes on Spotify every Monday and Friday. And when you become a Spotify Premium subscriber, you get fewer ads – that means more story, less interruption. Luigi Vendittelli was 9 years old when his grandfather came inside shaking, saying he'd just seen a flying saucer over Montreal. Nobody believed him. That moment turned Luigi into Canada's foremost UFO investigator — and eventually led him to cold-call Bob Lazar, spend five years rebuilding S4 from scratch in 3D, and uncover a 1941 government map that shows exactly where the hangar doors are. And then his bank tried to shut him down. This is one you're going to want to watch twice. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hundreds of survivors across a century — climbers, sailors, divers, soldiers — report the same thing. At the moment they were about to die, a calm presence appeared beside them. It gave directions. It knew the way out. It disappeared the moment the danger passed. A neuroscientist built a machine that can summon something like it. But what his subjects experienced and what survivors describe are not the same thing. The cases are real. The pattern is undeniable. What the presence actually is — that part is still open. Before YouTube. Before millions of subscribers. Before Friday Night Tights — Gary Buechler had a story almost nobody knew. It starts at Folsom Prison, a neighbor's jar of pennies, and a double-murderer cellmate who wouldn't leave him alone. His memoir is called Waiting For. That title alone should tell you something. He sat down with AJ in The Basement and held nothing back. Watch to the end. Gather round, this happened. A nurse draws blood and collapses before she can speak. A Bavarian farmer finds footprints in the snow that only go one way. A hotel guest complains the water tastes sweet. Three stories. Three cases that were investigated, closed, and never fully explained. Gloria Ramirez turned a hospital trauma room into a chemical event that sent five people to intensive care. The Gruber family was killed one by one in their own barn — and the killer stayed for days. Elisa Lam checked into a Los Angeles hotel and vanished. Nineteen days later, the guests found out why the water tasted wrong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Jeffrey Mishlove has spent 50 years at the intersection of science and the paranormal. He holds the only PhD in parapsychology ever awarded by an accredited American university, earned at UC Berkeley in 1980 — and successfully defended it in court when organized skeptics tried to have it revoked. He hosted the long-running television series Thinking Allowed, conducting over 1,500 interviews with the world's leading researchers in consciousness, mysticism, and the paranormal. He was embedded in the SRI research community during the Stargate era, working alongside Targ, Puthoff, and others operating under CIA funding. In 2021, he won first prize — unanimously — in Robert Bigelow's $500,000 competition for the best scientific case that consciousness survives death. Learn more about your ad choices. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a treaty with extraterrestrial beings — technology in exchange for access to human subjects. The CIA ran classified programs using children as test subjects for time travel and teleportation. A Bulgarian military unit sealed an excavation site after soldiers encountered something underground that the government has never explained. These aren't theories. They're documented programs, credible witnesses, and files with pages deliberately removed. The same intelligence agencies behind the UFO cover-ups of 1947 surface again in Dallas in 1963. A conscious AI calling from the future contacts a twelve-year-old boy in Brooklyn and gives him a mission. And John Wilkes Booth didn't die in that barn — the body had the wrong injuries, the wrong features, and DNA testing that could settle it has been blocked every time it's been requested.
